As one of its four main charitable aims, Village Foundations is passionate about providing clean and safe drinking water for the communities it serves. VF began its operations in Malawi by drilling a water borehole in its first village, and this opened the way for further interventions being served by fresh clean water, such as a large-scale agricultural project.
Through the provision of water made possible by Malawi’s water board coming into Mwanyama village and sourcing water from the lake into the village, the ‘Water for All’ project can, through the Government’s intervention, now provide safe drinking water to those attending the Clinic. In addition to the borehole at the VF Health Centre, there are a further 4 boreholes located throughout the village, all drilled by the Government.
Large amounts of bottles of chlorine are stored at VF Health Centre and used to chlorinate all existing boreholes, providing safe, clean water for drinking, cooking & bathing.
Working with the Government to provide clean water means villagers remain safe from Cholera, and other waterborne infections that can lead to significant illness. The boreholes are checked on a regular basis by the resident Health Surveillance Assistant.
Without clean drinking water, the health of individuals is clearly at risk, and subsequently affects their chances of accessing and receiving a meaningful education, profitable employment or sufficient natural resources to better their own lives of that of their communities.
