The work of VF originally grew from the outreach arm of the Congregation of Yahweh in the UK. Now, as a standalone Charity, VF has evolved and grown into a self-sustaining NGO. It’s accepted that Malawi has a long history of being a very religious country, with estimates showing that around 87% of the population identify as Christian.
Although not one of the four cornerstones of a successful community, VF understands that religion and community are important to the way of life of many people in Malawi. Considering this, VF has run projects to build infrastructure and buildings which serve as churches for communities to congregate. These also act as local focal points and community centres which can be used by communities for other activities.
Throughout the timespan of VFs’ projects in Malawi, strong use has been made of the buildings developed, with regular town meetings, first aid courses, CPR courses, vaccination clinics, village social events, parties, markets, as well as regular church services.
VF firmly believes that having a space to use both as a centre for religion and community will only ever serve to bring communities together to exchange help and grow their way out of poverty.
